38th Annual Awards Update

In keeping with on-going public health guidance, the Irish Concrete Society regrets that the 38th Annual Awards Dinner will not be held this year.

As the awards had been scheduled to take place on the 24th October, we will instead announce the winners of this year’s competition on that date.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of this year’s entrants for their patience and understanding, and wish you all the very best.

Our office will be in contact to arrange refunding of tickets.

Lunchtime Seminar Series

Introduction

Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new form of concrete that exhibits enhanced strength and durability properties in comparison to conventional concretes. However, associated higher binder contents and significantly higher initial costs requires improved material sustainability performance. Conducted in Sligo Institute of Technology, this research examined the development of new UHPC mixes to improve both material sustainability and to make UHPC more readily available. In addition to conducting experimental characteristic strength testing, experimental testing and three-dimensional finite element modelling were conducted on small-scale structural elements to determine the structural behaviour of the material and demonstrate how numerical modelling can be utilised for the future development of design codes and guidelines.

Who should attend

This presentation will be of interest to all those who are involved in the design, specification and construction of concrete structures. Those who should attend include architects, consulting engineers, engineers in contracting firms, specialist concrete sub-contractors, concrete and precast concrete producers, concrete technologists, and precast concrete designers.

Introduction

A research team from Trinity College has finished a very extensive in-field and laboratory investigation into how the known fact that high percentage GGBS mixes normally have slower hydration rates might be overcome in precast works. Normally GGBS’s inclusion is less suited to the  very early age stress-transfer and/or striking times so paramount for productivity in precast factories.  This talk will describe how 0, 30, 50 and 70% GGBS precast concrete mixes for hollowcore slabs were refined in an attempt to activate the GGBS at a very early age. Techniques used included using a new GGBS accelerator, more efficient thermal curing, higher fineness GGBS and a novel practical technique for compacting cubes to give more reliable 22 hour compressive strengths.

Executive Officer Appointment

Executive Officer Appointment

The Irish Concrete Society would like to announce that Dr. Rosemary Byrne has been appointed as the new Executive Officer of the Society.

Rosemary is re-joining the concrete industry after a period in academia, having previously worked at a senior level in Irish concrete production.

Annual Dinner Postponed

In response to the developing Covid-19 epidemic, Irish Concrete Society have taken the decision to postpone the Annual dinner until later in 2020. The decision was taken in the interests of our members and our wider community.  We are currently exploring dates for an event in September and October and will advise of new arrangements when they become finalised.  Full refunds are available.

Judging of the 38th Annual Awards has been completed and results will be announced in due course.

8th International Award Launched

The Irish Concrete Society are delighted to announce the launch of our 8th International Award.  This year there has been a minor but important change in the competition rules.  Entrants are encouraged to read the report requirements and judging criteria carefully.

This year’s entry form, which includes the full competition rules is available here.

All entries to be sent to be submitted to the Society by the 7th of February 2020.

Winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner in The Clayton Hotel Burlington Road, Dublin 4 on the 21st of March 2020.

ICS / ICT Advanced Concrete Technology Lecture

An advanced Concrete Technology lecture will take place in Trinity College Dublin on the evening of the 30th of January 2020.

This event is jointly organised by the Irish Concrete Society and the Institute of Concrete Technology.

Chaired by Professor Roger West, the lecture Concrete in a world of zero-emissionswill be given by Professor Fred Glasser, a noted expert in materials chemistry.

The lecture is aimed at Concrete Technologists and Academics in the field.

Registration via Eventbrite is required.  There is no charge for the event.

In the event of demand exceeding capacity, priority will be given in the first instance to members of the ICS and ICT.

As is normal practice, the ICT and ICS will bring the speaker for dinner at a local restaurant after the lecture. Members of the ICT and ICS are also invited to attend at their own expense. Please inform john.reddy@ecocem.ie if you wish to attend dinner afterwards (for the purposes of booking). In the event of restricted numbers, priority will be given to those who book first.

Achieving Durable Concrete Technical Seminar

Specifying the right concrete for each concrete element of a project
is a critical part of achieving durable sustainable structures that meet
client expectations.
In this day-long seminar, we look at aspects of design which enable Engineers to achieve durable reinforced concrete. From understanding the processes of possible deterioration to guidance on selecting exposure classes and using IS EN206. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and network during this day-long technical seminar, held in partnership with Engineers Ireland.

Who should attend

This seminar will be of interest to all those who are involved in the design, specification and construction of concrete.  Consulting Engineers, Site Engineers, Main Contractors, Specialist Sub-Contractors and Ready-Mixed Concrete Producers.

Seminar Topics

  • Codes and Standards— Jim Mansfield, Kavanagh Mansfield
  • Constituents – Éanna Nolan, Irish Cement
  • Processes of Deterioration – Ciaran McNally, UCD
  • Exposure Classes and trade offs – Prof. Roger West, TCD
  • Specifying Concrete website – Richard Bradley, Irish Cement
  • Using I.S. EN 206—Brian O’Rourke, Cork IT
  • Concrete in aggressive ground—Cathal Quinn, ARUP
