Introduction to Society
Kiltrough Water Tower

The Irish Concrete Society was formed in
Dublin in 1973 and now has regional branches in Cork, Galway and Limerick. The Society is concerned with design and construction in concrete; it promotes excellence in the use of concrete and is very active in areas of technical development, such as the emergence of European standards.

The Society is also involved in the promotion and running of lectures, seminars and courses including an Advanced Concrete Technology course which leads to a diploma, awarded by the Institution of Concrete Technology, UK. It is also involved in Modular Courses, run jointly with the IEI and promotes and organizes joint visits in conjunction with colleagues from the Northern Ireland branch of the UK Concrete Society.

Membership is open to all who may have any involvement in the use or promotion of the material concrete. A particular feature of the Society is the Award Scheme, which began in 1979. The awards are made annually by the Society for excellence in design and construction in concrete Buildings, Structures or Elements and are held in very high esteem. The scheme was extended some years ago to pay tribute to concrete in sculpture. There is also a student prize presented annually to encourage students’ interest in concrete.

The Society receives generous support from both individual and corporate members, with corporate members drawn from organizations in the construction industry, local authorities and third level faculties and departments of engineering, architecture and construction. In addition to their financial support, the corporate member organization provides the personnel to serve on the various committees at no cost to the Society.
